Why Japan counts years this way
Each emperor opens an era (nengo) and the official calendar restarts: 2019 became Reiwa 1 when Emperor Naruhito acceded. Government paperwork, driver licenses and the Japanese resume (rirekisho) still ask for imperial era dates, which is why every foreigner in Japan converts constantly. The pocket trick for recent years: Reiwa = year minus 2018, Heisei = year minus 1988, Showa = year minus 1925. Fine print: in transition years (1989, 2019) the era changes mid year on the exact succession date; this converter uses the civil year, the accepted convention on everyday forms.
