On and off the track

Katayama started 97 Grands Prix between 1992 and 1997, mostly for Tyrrell, winning fans over with his attacking style and warm humor and scoring all five of his points in 1994. Life after F1 brought remarkable adventures: he finished second overall at the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours in the Toyota GT-One, winning the GTP class, and contested the Dakar Rally for Toyota in the mid 2000s. He also became a serious mountaineer, summiting Cho Oyu in 2001 and Manaslu in 2006, two of the world's highest peaks, and completing six of the Seven Summits.
