On and off the track

Alex Zanardi had a modest F1 record with Jordan, Minardi and Lotus between 1991 and 1994 and a pointless Williams comeback in 1999, but in America he built one of motorsport's most celebrated careers, winning the CART championship in 1997 and 1998 with Chip Ganassi. In 2001 he lost both legs in a horrific crash at the Lausitzring, and his response became legend: he returned to win races in the WTCC with an adapted BMW and, in para-cycling, earned four Paralympic gold medals and two silvers across London 2012 and Rio 2016. In June 2020 he suffered a serious handbike accident in Tuscany and spent the following years in a long recovery, surrounded by his family. Zanardi passed away on May 1, 2026, at age 59, peacefully and among his loved ones, as his family announced, leaving behind his wife Daniela, his son Niccolo, and a legacy of courage that transcends sport.

Alessandro Zanardi's milestones

Between the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix, held at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and the 1999 Japanese Grand Prix, Alessandro Zanardi (Italy) built the whole career. The on-track high point was a P6 finish at the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix. It added up to 42 starts spread over 20 circuits in 15 countries, at 0 points per start. The most worn colours were those of Team Lotus, for 22 races.

The points peak came in 1993, with 1. From the debut in 1991 to the last season in 1999, every year in the table above has its own page; the titles of the period sit with the Formula 1 world champions.
