How to read this count

Italy leads with 63 inscriptions, followed by People's Republic of China (60) and Germany (56). In total there are 1,256 distinct World Heritage List inscriptions, spread across 201 countries or territories.

Transparent criterion: we count distinct UNESCO inscription numbers (Wikidata property P757) per country. Components of serial sites share the same base number and count only once, as in the official list. Transboundary sites count for every country involved, which is why the column adds up to more than the world total. Small gaps against UNESCO's official scoreboard come from delisted sites or from records still incomplete in the open database.
