New York Yankees in numbers: decades, seasons and the World Series

This is the statistical portrait of the New York Yankees in MLB: 19,452 regular season games between 1901 and 2025, recomputed game by game from Retrosheet's logs. The all time balance is 10,990 wins against 8,369 losses (a .568 percentage), with 27 World Series titles. The tables below break that account down by decade and show the extremes: the golden seasons and the embarrassing ones.

Key: G games, W wins, L losses and T ties, those old games suspended by darkness and never completed, which stay out of the winning percentage. The decade the New York Yankees entered the league and the current decade appear incomplete.

Decade by decade, the New York Yankees peak came in the 1930s: 970 wins across 1,541 games, a .636 percentage. The roughest stretch was the 1910s, at 701 wins and 780 losses (.473). The gap between the franchise ceiling and floor shows how baseball punishes and rewards in long cycles.

Seasons need at least 100 decisions to qualify, which excludes 2020, shortened to 60 games. A curiosity computed from the logs: the longest New York Yankees winning streak in a single season was 19 games, in 1947.

World Series: titles and appearances

27 World Series titles sit in the New York Yankees history books: 1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009. In all, the franchise reached the final 41 times. Names in parentheses show what the franchise was called in that title year; scores and opponents for each series are in the year by year World Series archive table.

One fact to keep

No club in American major sports has won as much: 27 World Series titles, including five in a row from 1949 to 1953, a run no other MLB franchise has matched. The dynasty began after the purchase of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox before the 1920 season, the most famous deal in baseball history.

Source and legal notice

The numbers on this page about the New York Yankees were computed by this site from the game logs of the Retrosheet project (retrosheet.org), snapshot of 2026-07-10, covering the 1901 to 2025 seasons of the American and National Leagues. Conventions: tie games (suspended and never finished) count as games played but stay out of the winning percentage, and do not break winning streaks; best and worst seasons require at least 100 decisions, which excludes the shortened 2020 season.
