Key: G games, W wins, L losses and T ties, those old games suspended by darkness and never completed, which stay out of the winning percentage. The decade the Boston Red Sox entered the league and the current decade appear incomplete.

Decade by decade, the Boston Red Sox peak came in the 1910s: 857 wins across 1,507 games, a .579 percentage. The roughest stretch was the 1920s, at 595 wins and 938 losses (.388). The gap between the franchise ceiling and floor shows how baseball punishes and rewards in long cycles.

Seasons need at least 100 decisions to qualify, which excludes 2020, shortened to 60 games. A curiosity computed from the logs: the longest Boston Red Sox winning streak in a single season was 15 games, in 1946.

World Series: titles and appearances

9 World Series titles sit in the Boston Red Sox history books: 1903 (Boston Americans), 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013, 2018. In all, the franchise reached the final 13 times. Names in parentheses show what the franchise was called in that title year; scores and opponents for each series are in the year by year World Series archive table.

One fact to keep

After selling Babe Ruth in 1920, the club went 86 years without a title, a wait the press named the Curse of the Bambino. The turn came in 2004: down 3-0 to the Yankees in the American League Championship Series, Boston won four straight, the only team in MLB history to win a postseason series after trailing 3-0, then took the World Series.

Where these numbers come from

Every total, decade and record on this page about the Boston Red Sox comes from the game logs (one line per game) of the Retrosheet project (retrosheet.org), seasons 1901 to 2025 of the American and National Leagues, snapshot of 2026-07-10, recomputed by this site and copied from no one. Tie games count as games played, stay out of the percentage and do not interrupt winning streaks; the 100 decision filter keeps the short 2020 season out of the best and worst campaign lists. The statement below appears verbatim because Retrosheet's license requires it.
