On and off the track
Reine Wisell joined Lotus late in 1970, in the difficult period after Jochen Rindt's death, and stunned everyone by finishing on the podium in his very first race, taking third at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen behind only Emerson Fittipaldi and Pedro Rodriguez. It remained his only podium in 23 Grands Prix through 1974, in which he scored 13 points. After leaving F1 he stayed connected to the sport as a member of the Grand Prix Drivers' Club, attending events in Europe when he could, and in his later years he lived mainly in rural Thailand. He passed away on March 20, 2022, at age 80.
