On and off the track

Mike Beuttler raced privately entered March cars in F1 from 1971 to 1973, funded by a group of stockbroker friends whose names formed the team title, Clarke Mordaunt Guthrie Racing. With the money gone, he left F1 after 1973 and later moved to the United States. He died in 1988, aged 48, of AIDS related complications, and is remembered today as F1's first known gay driver, a pioneer whose story has only recently been told with the care it deserves.
