Babylon, Ophiuchus and why the tropical zodiac keeps 12 fixed signs
The 12-sign zodiac was born in Babylon around the 5th century BC, slicing the Sun's apparent path into 12 equal segments of 30 degrees. Here is the astronomical fact most sites hide: the real ecliptic crosses 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus, and because of the precession of the equinoxes the constellations have drifted almost a full sign since Babylon. Western astrology did not get the math wrong: it uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons (the Aries point is the March equinox), not to the stars. They are two different reference systems, and this site uses the traditional tropical ranges, noting that the boundary between signs shifts about 1 day depending on the year.
