How 2022 made history
The 2022 season marked the return of ground effect to F1, with an entirely new technical rulebook that reshuffled the grid. Ferrari started on top: Charles Leclerc won two of the first three races, in Bahrain and Australia, and led the early championship. The new cars, however, brought porpoising, the violent high speed bouncing that took a physical toll on drivers and led the FIA to intervene with a technical directive from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards. While Ferrari piled up strategy errors and reliability failures, Red Bull developed the RB18 and turned the tide: Max Verstappen sealed his second title as early as Japan and ended the year with 15 wins, an outright record for a single season, beating the 13 of Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. The team won 17 of the 22 races and clinched the constructors' title in the United States, its first since 2013, ending Mercedes' eight year streak. Leclerc finished the championship as runner-up.
