Scott Speed was the first American to race in F1 since 1993, driving for Toro Rosso in 2006 and 2007, but he left the team mid-2007 after friction with team boss Franz Tost, opening the seat that launched Sebastian Vettel. He moved to NASCAR and later found his greatest success in rallycross, becoming a four-time American champion with Andretti and Volkswagen by winning the Global Rallycross title in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the Americas Rallycross crown in 2018. He fractured three vertebrae in a jump at the 2019 Nitro World Games, but recovered and returned with the factory Subaru team in Nitro Rallycross in 2021, finishing runner-up. He remains connected to Subaru and American off-road racing.
