How the Buddhist Era (พ.ศ.) works

The Buddhist Era counts years from the parinirvana of the Buddha, fixed in the Thai convention at 543 BCE. That makes conversion a straight sum: add 543 to the Western year, and 2026 becomes พ.ศ. 2569. In Thailand the era is in full civil use: it appears on government documents, ID cards, coins, newspapers and printed expiry dates, which is why visitors are startled by milk that "expires in 2570". Since 1941 the Thai Buddhist year has started on January 1st, keeping both calendars aligned month by month.

Neighbours use variants: in Sri Lanka and Myanmar the same era usually yields a 544 year difference, because the parinirvana year enters the count as year 1 and the year turns at Vesak. In Cambodia and Laos the new year falls in April, so the difference swings between 543 and 544 depending on the month. For Thai paperwork, the value from this converter is the one that counts.
