De um testamento a 125 anos de prêmios
Alfred Nobel assinou seu testamento em novembro de 1895, destinando a fortuna que construiu com a invenção da dinamite a prêmios anuais para quem trouxesse "o maior benefício à humanidade" em Física, Química, Medicina, Literatura e Paz. Morreu em dezembro de 1896, e os primeiros prêmios saíram em 1901: Wilhelm Röntgen pelos raios X, Jacobus van 't Hoff, Emil von Behring, Sully Prudhomme e, na Paz, Henry Dunant e Frédéric Passy. A Economia não estava no testamento: foi criada pelo banco central sueco em 1968 e entrou na tabela em 1969.
Em 125 anos foram 1018 laureados, dos quais 67 mulheres. Marie Curie segue única: premiada em duas ciências diferentes, Física em 1903 e Química em 1911. Outros 4 venceram duas vezes (John Bardeen, Linus Pauling, Frederick Sanger e K. Barry Sharpless), e a Cruz Vermelha venceu três. A laureada mais jovem foi Malala Yousafzai, aos 17 anos, na Paz de 2014; o mais velho, John Goodenough, aos 97, na Química de 2019. As lacunas da tabela não são erro: nas duas guerras mundiais várias categorias ficaram sem prêmio, e a Paz é a que mais vezes ficou vazia.
