On and off the track

The first South African to start a Formula 1 Grand Prix, Maggs raced from 1961 to 1965 and peaked at Cooper with two second-place finishes in the French Grand Prix in 1962 and 1963. His career ended painfully in 1965: in a national race at Pietermaritzburg his Brabham crashed and struck a young boy standing in a restricted area, who did not survive. Deeply affected, Maggs walked away from motorsport immediately and devoted himself to business and farm life in South Africa. He passed away in June 2009 after battling cancer.

Tony Maggs's milestones

Tony Maggs (South Africa) arrived at the 1961 British Grand Prix, at Aintree, and bowed out at the 1965 South African Grand Prix. The best result was a P2 finish at the 1962 French Grand Prix. The final tally reads 27 starts, 14 different circuits, 11 countries and 1 points per race on average. No team kept the driver longer than Cooper-Climax, over 19 races.

No season paid more points than 1962 (13). It is worth opening the debut, in 1961, the farewell, in 1965, and the list of Formula 1 world champions of the era.
