Tipping conventions
In the US, 15 to 20% is standard at sit-down restaurants (18% is a common default; 20% for good service), since servers rely on tips as wages. Counter service: 0 to 10%. Delivery: 10 to 15% with a minimum. Abroad the rules change: Brazil adds an optional 10% service charge to the bill, much of Europe includes service, and in Japan tipping can even cause offense. Adjust the percentage above for any convention.
