On and off the track

Da Matta joined Toyota in 2003 as the reigning CART champion, having dominated the 2002 season with Newman/Haas with seven wins and seven poles. His F1 stint lasted until mid 2004, with a best finish of fifth, before he returned to American racing. In August 2006 he suffered a serious accident while testing at Road America, colliding with a deer that crossed the track, and spent weeks in the hospital with a head injury. He recovered, returned to race in American sports car events from 2008, and today lives a quiet life away from the spotlight.

Cristiano da Matta's milestones

Between the 2003 Australian Grand Prix, held at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, and the 2004 German Grand Prix, Cristiano da Matta (Brazil) built the whole career. The on-track high point was a P6 finish at the 2003 Spanish Grand Prix. It added up to 28 starts spread over 17 circuits in 15 countries, at 0.5 points per start. The points peak came in 2003, with 10. From the debut in 2003 to the last season in 2004, every year in the table above has its own page; the titles of the period sit with the Formula 1 world champions.
