How the formulas work
The four formulas start from a base weight at 5 ft (1.52 m) and add a few kilograms for every inch of height above that. They were created in clinical and pharmacological settings, to estimate drug dosing and reference values, not as a diet target. Because they use different constants, they diverge: for a man of 1.80 m, Devine returns about 75.0 kg, Robinson about 72.6 kg, Miller about 71.5 kg and Hamwi about 77.3 kg. The healthy BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) for that height runs from about 59.9 kg to 80.7 kg, which shows how wide the band of healthy weights actually is.
Being honest about the result
None of these formulas account for muscle mass, bone structure, body fat share or age. A very muscular person may weigh above the range and be perfectly healthy. Treat the interval as a starting point for a conversation with a professional, not a number to hit.
