How many healthcare providers work in New Jersey? The federal NPPES registry listed 230,873 active NPIs with a practice address in the state as of the June 2026 snapshot, the 12th largest workforce among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The single largest specialty is Clinical Social Worker, and Newark is the city with the most records. The table below lists the 30 specialties with the most active providers and the share each one holds.

What the numbers show

Clinical Social Worker leads with 11,380 active records, 4.9% of everything the state has, or 1.0 times the volume of Physical Therapist, the runner up at 11,178. Mental Health Counselor rounds out the podium with 10,647. Together, the top 5 specialties account for 21.4% of New Jersey's providers, and the 30 listed in the table cover 59.4% of the total. Overall, the state registry splits into 762 distinct taxonomies.

Geographically, active NPIs spread across 1,246 cities and towns in the state, but with heavy concentration: Newark (6,524), Cherry Hill (5,406) and Westampton (4,845) post the largest volumes.
