The purchasing power of money in the United Kingdom over time
Converting money across time is the only fair way to compare prices in the United Kingdom. With the World Bank index, available from 1960 to 2025, you can see that £100.00 in 2000 corresponds to £187.97 in 2025. The top of the series is 1975, a year of 24.2% inflation; the recent decade ran at 3.3% a year on average and 2025 closed at 3.9%.

What the series shows
No period weighed more than the 1970s, which averaged 12.6% a year; at the opposite end, 2015 was the most stable year, at 0.4%. From 2000 to 2025 prices accumulated a rise of 88%: what cost £100.00 in 2000 costs £187.97 in 2025. There is not a single deflation year in the whole series: prices always went up.

Honest limits of these numbers
These numbers come from the World Bank national average CPI (FP.CPI.TOTL, base 2010 = 100): yearly averages for the entire country, with no regional breakdown and no month by month view. No legally binding adjustment should come out of this page: the reference is always the official local index, such as Brazil's IPCA or the American CPI-U. Coverage for United Kingdom runs from 1960 to 2025 (66 years); World Bank series start in different years depending on the country. Amounts always come out in GBP, the current currency: past currency changes and dropped zeros are already embedded in the continuity of the index.
